Performance Update at 31 May 2018

 

 

Month to 31 May 2018

 

PIP announced an unaudited net asset value ("NAV") per share at 31 May 2018 of 2,414.8p, an increase of 115.1p (5.0%) from the NAV per share as at 30 April 2018. Valuation gains* (44.6p, 1.9%), investment income (4.0p, 0.2%) and foreign exchange movements (69.6p, 3.0%) were partially offset by expenses and taxes** (-3.1p, -0.1%).

PIP's valuation policy for private equity funds is based on the latest valuations reported by the managers of the funds in which PIP has holdings. In the case of PIP's valuation at 31 May 2018, the majority of reported valuations (accounting for circa 96% by value) are dated 31 March 2018 or later.

At 31 May 2018, PIP's private equity assets stood at £1,275m, whilst cash balances were £162m. The Asset Linked Note*** ("ALN") outstanding as at 31 May 2018 amounted to £132m. Undrawn commitments to investments stood at £440m as at 31 May 2018, calculated using exchange rates at that date. PIP's multi-currency revolving credit facilities comprise a US$138.8m facility and a €66.6m facility, which remained completely undrawn as at 31 May 2018.

 

PIP's portfolio generated net cash of £23.4m during the month, with distributions of £29.6m relative to £6.2m of calls from existing commitments to private equity funds. PIP made a quarterly ALN repayment of £13.9m during the month.

 

PIP completed four investments during the month, amounting to £6.2m in new commitments. This included a £1.8m co-investment alongside CVC Capital Partners in Gas Natural, a Spanish natural gas and energy utilities company, and a £1.1m co-investment alongside Abris Capital in Velvet Care, a manufacturer of tissue paper in the CEE region.

*Valuation gains are stated net of valuation movements, investment income and foreign exchange movements attributable to the ALN share of the reference portfolio.  The total effect was a reduction in valuation gains of 9.8p and 20.6p for the month and financial year to 31 May 2018 respectively.

Financial year ended 31 May 2018

 

Proposals announced by PIP on 28 September 2017 to effect the consolidation of its ordinary and redeemable share capital into a single class of Ordinary Shares and to issue an unlisted Asset Linked Note were approved by shareholders at the EGM and Class Meetings held on 30 October 2017. The new Ordinary Shares were admitted to trading on the Main Market of the London Stock Exchange on 1 November 2017; there are no longer any Redeemable Shares in issue.

Performance  

The unaudited NAV per share at 31 May 2018 of 2,414.8p is an increase of 224.9p (10.3%) relative to the NAV per share at 31 May 2017. Valuation gains* (294.8p, 13.5%), investment income (25.8p, 1.2%) and share buybacks (1.3p, 0.1%) were offset by foreign exchange movements (-47.6p, -2.2%), expenses and taxes** (-49.4p, -2.3%)

Portfolio Cash Flow

PIP's portfolio generated net cash of £255.8m during the year to 31 May 2018, with distributions of £341.9m relative to £86.1m of calls from existing commitments to private equity funds. PIP made ALN repayments of £77.2m during the year.

 

New Commitments

 

PIP made 50 new investments in the year, amounting to £256.1m in commitments. This included 13 secondary investments (£107.2m), 15 primary investments (£87.4m) and 22 co-investments (£61.5m).

Foreign Exchange Exposure

 

At 31 May 2018, the value of the private equity investment assets stood at £1,275m. Of the private equity investment assets at PIP's holding level, 77% were represented by funds reporting values denominated in US dollars, 19% denominated in euros, 2% denominated in sterling and 2% denominated in other currencies. Of the 77% of investment assets denominated in US dollars, approximately 9% (expressed as a proportion of PIP's total portfolio) are invested in funds investing mainly in Europe and approximately 11% (expressed as a proportion of PIP's total portfolio) in funds investing mainly in Asia. In addition to the funds reporting values denominated in sterling, many of the euro-denominated funds have investments in the UK.
